Milford Deep

View a rich marine ecosystem unparalleled anywhere else in the world. . .

Milford Deep Underwater Observatory is nestled in Harrison's Cove, beneath Pembroke Glacier, amongst towering mountains of Fiordland National Park. Here visitors descend 10.4 metres, the equivalent of a four storied building, leading down beneath this world famous fiord. Once down in the spacious viewing room, people are able to view, from within a metre, intimate and undisturbed life in a vibrant underwater community. This provides a unique opportunity to closely view the real life situations deep below the surface of the fiord quite different from the artificial environment of an aquarium. One can see rare species such as black and red coral that are usually at depths of than forty metres and marvel at anemones, sponges, sea stars, horse mussels and of course the fish.

Milford Deep Underwater Observatory - Adult $29.00, Child $15.00

Milford Deep Underwater Observatory
Milford Deep Underwater Observatory,
a remarkable experience

The Fiord contains a unique and beautiful underwater environment; there is nowhere else like it in the world. Situated in the middle of the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, the Milford Deep Underwater Observatory lets everyone see in comfort and ease this special world that previously has been the exclusive realm of divers.

The expansive arrival deck leads to a visitor reception hall for your welcome and interpretation of the geology and ecology of the region. Visitors descend into the large, fully air conditioned, undersea viewing area, which features large windows of excellent optical clarity providing exceptional close up detail of this deep magical world.

The viewing area incorporates 120mm thick acrylic windows. You can see sea stars climbing the rock face, black coral feeding in front of the windows – all being inspected by a variety of fish. You are never sure whether an octopus, a seal or any ocean predator may appear from the unfathomable dark water of the fiord.
